Los Alamitos Thoroughbred: Saturday 9/12

Today's featured event is the E.B. Johnston stakes for Cal-Bred three year olds and up at the distance of one mile and it will go as race 8 on the 9-race program. First race goes off at 2 p.m.

Today's Picks:

Race 1:  2-7-1

#2 Cunning Ride returns to So Cal after a couple of months up in Northern California. The return to dirt and the return to Los Al should do him good. His last win was over this track during the night programs at the distance of 870 yards.

Race 2:  3-2-5

#3 Exemplar has been overmatched against much tougher fields. He takes a big drop in class and has been working on this track during the mornings. He should be somewhere in the middle of the pack turning for home.

Race 3:  6-3-4

#6 Flyin for a Livin didn't fire when fifth as the betting favorite last time out against a slightly tougher group. Going first off the claim and a class drop should have her in the mix turning for home.

Race 4:  4-5-7

#4 One Bye Two has gotten better in each of her last three starts. She has enough speed to take the lead and she finished a good second over this track during the summer meet.

Race 5:  8-2-1

#8 Beyond Lucky has a good outside post that should allow her to get a clear path. She's got enough speed to get a good position early on and the drop in class should also her her chances.

Race 6:  7-1-2

#7 Silver Spirit ran a much improved effort in his first start on the dirt when second against a similar field at Santa Anita. He looks to have a good set of workouts in preparation for his second start on the dirt.

Race 7:  9-10-1

#9 W Giles looked powerful down the stretch in his last win at Del Mar against easier. He set a fast pace and had plenty more left at the end. This is a tougher field but if he can get away with little pressure early on in the race, he might be long gone.

Race 8:  8-4-7

#8 Motown Men has found most of his success at this distance. He can go to the lead or can stalk the leaders. He's the deserving favorite.

Race 9:  6-5-4

#6 Blue Cilantro chased a solid pace before weakening to fourth in her last start at Del Mar. She is adding blinkers and is only making her third lifetime start. Her sire, Square Eddie, is having a tremendous year, and I think we have not seen the best of this filly.

I watch horses run around.
