The Los Alamitos Super Derby
Saturday's featured event is the Grade I $859,400 Los Alamitos Super Derby featuring the 9-for-10 Heza Dasha Fire going for his second graded stakes win as a three year old. He looked terrific in the trials and will be a very short price at post time.
The winner of the Super Derby will also earn a berth to the Grade I Champion of Champions in December. Many folks would like to see a Moonist and Heza Dasha Fire in that race and we might just get that scenario if Heza Dasha Fire can win the Super Derby.
Picks:
Race 1: 1-2-4
#1 Hayley's Gray can take this field gate to wire if she breaks sharply from the rail post.
Race 2: 1-3-5
#1 Puig Wilson ran too-good-to-lose to finish a solid second after breaking last, a clean break will give him a big shot.
Race 3: 8-7-5
#8 Getcha Sweet Jess is facing a group that lacks a stand out and I think she is much better than these with a clean start from the outside post.
Race 4: 2-7-8
#2 Dukes Encore ran a good effort when missing by a neck in a similar spot, I think the cutback in distance to 300 yards will help him.
Race 5: 5-2-1
#5 Hescomingonstrong looks to be in a good spot. The drop in class and a repeat effort from two starts ago should get him the win.
Race 6: 2-3-6
#2 Not Yet Corona didn't run all to bad in his debut and I expect improvement in his second outing.
Race 7: 5-7-6
#5 Apollitical Dream was well meant last time out but lost all chance with the trouble. Another drop in class should help her chances. I have always liked her breeding.
Race 8: 2-4-5
#2 Sheza Flight Risk is a consistent runner that will be in the mix and if she can avoid trouble i think she can win this at a decent price.
Race 9: 7-5-2
#7 Heza Dasha Fire is in tremendous form. In my opinion, he's the best Quarter Horse in the country right now.
