The AQHA Bank of America Challenge Championships have arrived to Lone Star Park. Tonight's 10-race program features six stakes and over $1,000,000 in purses. The Challenge Championships are unique because the horses that got here had to go through a bracket-style of qualifying races held throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and South America.
Picks:
Race 1: 5-3-7
#5 Kawow had been a consistent runner until he encountered some trouble in the Retama Derby last time out, he's back with allowance foes and the cutback in distance to 350 yards should help.
Race 2: 9-1-8
#9 Seisy Lady has been competitive against tougher field and now takes a class drop into the claiming ranks for the first time since her debut back in 2014.
Race 3: 8-2-5
#8 Flashy Firt Cartel lost by a nose over this track early last month in a good effort. The time off combined with the extra distance should give her a good shot to win.
Race 4: 3-9-1 The Invitational Bonus Challenge at 350 yards
#3 This Wagons Okay is a multiple stakes winner that has been competing against good fields and has been the betting favorite in six of his last eight starts. I would be surprised (but happy) if we get the 10-1 morning line odds on him.
Race 5: 1-7-6 The Zoetis Distance Challenge Championship at 870 yards
#1 Sensational Dash is taking the blinkers off after a disappointing effort last time out. The last two times she has used blinkers she has finished last in both starts. She's much better without blinkers and I like her early speed and inside post. With a short run to the first turn, a fast start from the inside post could give her the opportunity to steal the race.
Race 6: 11-10-5 The John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship at 350 yards
#11 Undivided Atemption encountered some trouble last time and finished mid-pack. I'm willing to draw a line through that race and a repeat effort of his three previous starts will put him in the mix. I like the outside post and hope we get something close to the 8-1 morning line odds.
Race 7: 2-11-1 The Adequan Derby Challenge Championship
#2 Ajs High has won eight of his last ten starts and comes into this race fresh off a Derby win at Prairie Meadows. He owns a 5-for-7 record at this distance and this jockey has been aboard for his entire career.
Race 8: 11-7-9 The Merial Distaff Challenge Championship
#11 Visual Magic has looked strong in her last two wins and seems to love this track and this distance. She looks to be getting better at this outside post should give her a clear run down the lane.
Race 9: 5-11-7 The Bank of America Challenge Championship
#5 Jake Gold BR is a local horse for me because he's been competing here at Los Alamitos and has been a consistent performer since his dull effort in last year's Championship. He owns a pair of wins at this distance and has been facing tough foes like Moonist and Far Niente.
Race 10: 9-4-1
#9 Madies Milkshake gets the nod in a tricky race. She's been facing tougher competition and if can repeat any of her last few outings she will be in the mix.
